salt

you always found it strange; the way that I

would taste my tears, not let them fall away.

you watched me once again not long ago

and I recalled the warmth I drew from you.

now I’m mining salt and will forever

because we never learned to covet gold.

now when she cries she doesn’t cry a river

but I could never show you such control.
